"Protecting the whale is not just about saving a species; it is about protecting the mauri of our moana and the entire planet."

Our Mission: Protecting our Oceans Future
Te Moananui Sanctuary's real-world mission is to protect our ocean's future.
We are creating a network of safe "highways" across the Pacific Ocean so whales can travel, feed, and raise their babies without facing human-made threats.

Our Goal: The Recovery of One Million Whales
Our long-term goal is to assist Indigenous peoples to protect 12.5 million square kilometres across Polynesia, with plans to expand and connect the entire Blue Continent.
Why Whales are Global Climate Heroes
The sanctuary is about safeguarding the entire Earth.
Whales are the ultimate guardians of our climate for two huge reasons:
  • Ocean Gardeners: As they migrate, whales spread essential nutrients. This feeds tiny ocean plants called phytoplankton, which form the base of the entire ocean food chain and produce a massive amount of the oxygen we breathe.

  • Carbon Guardians: Over their long lives, whales trap and store huge amounts of carbon in their bodies. This keeps carbon out of the atmosphere, which directly helps slow down global warming.

A Shared Mission
By giving whales a safe place to thrive, we are helping the whole ocean heal. Te Moananui brings together Indigenous communities, Pacific nations, and the next generation of global youth in a shared mission: to make sure our moana stays healthy, resilient, and full of life for the future.

OUR STORY

Our logo pays homage to the wayfinders of Polynesia — those who read the stars, the winds and the waves to journey across the vast Pacific.

It honours the migratory paths of the Kuaka (Bar-tailed Godwit) and the Tofua’a / Tohorā (whale), which migrate alongside each other, guided by instincts woven through generations. The stars on either side - Matariki (Pleiades) and Takurua a Mere (Sirius) - mark the great sweep of the night sky, reflecting the breadth of our ocean and the central place of cosmology in our culture. Takurua-a-Mere, the zenith star of both Rāiatea and Tonga, rises above the sun, a beacon in our shared sky and pathway of knowledge.

Visually, the design flows with the energy of the ocean - curved and fluid, alive with shifting hues and layered forms. Geometric Polynesian patterns bring depth, grounding the logo in lineage, movement and story. More than a symbol, this is a reminder: we are voyagers still, guided by stars, stories and the living memory of the ocean.
